Final Essay Book

My Essay Book

This is my final model of my photo essay book. I was really happy with the way it turned out. It is very simple and has a really sleek design.

Photo Essay Preliminaries

These are the two book formats I was deciding between.  I decided to use the book shown on the left and make it out of card stock and glossy photo paper.

Photo Locations

Photo Locations

We spent a lot of time brainstorming on where we wanted to take our photos. We needed to find the best places on campus that expressed the meaning of our word. We decided we definitely needed to use Allen Field House. We also chose to use the Watson Library, Strong Hall, and we also wanted to experiment with lighting.

We finished constructing our word and decided to paint them bright white in order to make them stand out more. We were all really happy with how the final letters turned out.

EXPAND

These were my finally 5 designs for my word "expand". I created these in Illustrator and tried my best to capture their meaning using size and placement.

Photo Ops Reflection

Photo Ops Reflection

Photo Ops was an article helping people understand what photography is really about. It breaks it down nicely into certain sections that include: Symmetry and asymmetry, repetition, framing, continuous mode, and exploration. I thought this was a really good article and enjoyed reading it. I don't do a whole lot of photography and don't own a nice camera or anything, but this article actually made me interested in going out and capturing things I find neat. I liked that they talk about how you don't need some fancy, high-tech camera and crazy lighting to take a good photo. All you really need is to have a camera with you at all times so you can look around and snap what you see. The key principles that were talked about in this article taught me a ton of things I had never learned before about photography.

The Parts of the Letter

The Parts of the Letter Reflection

This article talked very specifically about typography and the parts that make up a letter. After reading this, I realized how thought out and precise letters can be. I never really knew that letters could get this specific and I now know a lot more about them. Although this was an interesting find for me, I'm not sure I need to know all of these parts for my major which is industrial design. This will, however, help me better understand our current project that focuses mainly on typography.
